Blog Post #3

For this blog post, I chose to use a scene from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2010). The editing cuts made for this particular scene seem to follow continuity editing protocols in my different ways. For example, the scene opens with Snape in a medium close up and cuts to Voldemort from his point of view. The next shot is a high angle wide shot of the room which also seems to be used as the establishing shot. Most of the shots from this scene seem to be from the point of view of Voldemort talking to the Death Eaters seated at the table and they also seem to include eyeline matches when the Death Eaters speaking are the main subject of the shot and in the shot where it seems that the Malfoys are the main subject of the camera. This scene seems to follow the 180 degree rule at time but it seems that there are some shots where there is a jump cut, or a 30 degree rule in use as well. This is seen in the ninth shot of the scene where Snape is speaking and Voldemort is visible to the left of the screen, slightly out of focus. This shot also seems like it can be considered to be from the point of view of the Death Eater sitting directly to Voldemort's right. Other jump cuts that seem to be common in this scene are the ones where either Snape or Bellatrix and the other Death Eaters are speaking to Voldemort. The camera quickly changes its focus between these characters.
